Do Babies Know?


Do you think babies know about gender? Because our baby girl loves her big sister more than anyone else in the world. Whenever little L sees her big sister, her eyes light up and she laughs and watches her sister very intently as she moves around the room. The first time I ever heard little L laugh was when her big sister leaned her head over her and looked at her upside down. I think she knows that one day she'll grow up to be just like her big sister. We hope she's not paying too much attention. Big sis has a flair for drama.

How I Spent my Summer Vacation

Well, it's that time of year again when the kids are back in school, probably not learning a whole lot yet and probably writing those back to school essays. I used to hate those when I was in school, but now I find myself reminiscing about them and wishing I were back in school with any kind of assignment. My summer vacation wasn't super eventful, but a lot changed over the summer. I'm the kind of mom who is anxious for summer vacation to begin, if only to get a break from all the dropping off, picking up, driving around running errands. Are you a starter or a finisher?

This post could sound like I'm referring to lots of different things, like sports or working at a machine shop. Really I'm just asking generally about your work style. I have discovered that I'm definitely, no holds barred, a starter. I LOVE starting new projects. I've had to suppress many urges to start new projects this summer. But I just kept asking myself, "When? When will you have time to work on that?" You already have about 5 projects going that you started last year." Seriously, I have something in every room of my house. In my office that I'm sitting in right now, I had a plan to make DIY magazine files thinking it'd be cheaper than buying them. I found a super cute post on pinterest of some that can be made with plywood ad 1x4s and I went straight to Home Depot and bought the materials. Here's something to think about for those of us with energetic boys. This was in the Washington Post last month. My children spend more time in the classroom than I did as a student and is it improving their performance? My 8 year old spends hours playing outside after school and has a lot of pent up emotion after spending so much of his time on structured, quiet activities. As I've visited his classroom, I've watched him wiggle around the circle during circle time, unable to remain seated in one place for very long. He also wanders around the classroom for far longer than his peers, putting things away or tidying up, while the teacher has the rest of the students gathered in a circle. Luckily, he has been in a gifted & talented classroom with teachers who are accommodating and are willing to tolerate his wanderings. What are your experiences with energetic boys in school?
