Well, it's that time of year again when the kids are back in school, probably not learning a whole lot yet and probably writing those back to school essays. I used to hate those when I was in school, but now I find myself reminiscing about them and wishing I were back in school with any kind of assignment. My summer vacation wasn't super eventful, but a lot changed over the summer.
I'm the kind of mom who is anxious for summer vacation to begin, if only to get a break from all the dropping off, picking up, driving around running errands. And our summer break started off with a bang. We took a trip to San Diego with my family over Memorial Day before summer even officially began. The kids enjoyed it because we were at the beach a lot, which is a novelty to them. We went boogey boarding and played on the sand with the cool wind rushing by (It was the end of May in San Diego) and even found a dead jellyfish that washed up on the beach. We returned home just in time for the kids to attend the last two days of school which seemed like a waste of time to me. A lot of parties and movies and desk cleaning parties and pizza parties and reading parties and did I mention parties? I'm glad that school will be ending before Memorial Day this year.
So after those last few days of learning, summer break began with the inundation of piles of masterpieces the kids had saved up all year just to bring home to me. My daughter brought hers home in a big plastic, garbage sack. I mentioned to the teacher how convenient that was since most of it just ends up in the garbage anyway. She didn't even crack a smile. I was joking. I did save one or two of them.
So with bags of my children's assignments, summer began and with it came exercise. If I had to choose just one word to sum up my summer vacation, that would be it: Exercise. I used to dread the word. But over the summer I had exercise planned virtually every day with just one day of rest on the Sabbath. My friend Shelly who is an elementary school P.E. teacher led most of it and it wasn't just walking in the park although we did do some of that too.
This has been a long introduction to a short story, but I'm just going to post it like this so my blog will actually have an update. Bottom line: I got pretty much in shape. I learned to run which I've never been able to do in my life. I just ran a 5k without stopping on Saturday and, yeah, my time wasn't great but I did it!
